My first CMJ experience ended with not seeing very many bands. However, it wasn’t a total loss. I explored the city, got interviewed by MTV & even saw Coldplay play in the cold on the Today Show.
Gary Clark Jr. - I don’t care if you don’t like blues, rock and/or soul, this guy is a must listen. His guitar playing abilities alone are phenomenal to see in person. Warning: if your foot starts tapping or your body unknowingly begins to sway, don’t be alarmed, it’s just good music.
Givers - Saw them in the Ace Hotel, such a beautiful venue to hold music. What’s more beautiful than that? A girl singer/drummer. That’s all that needs to be said.
Boy & Bear -Pleasant surprise performing at the Puma Store. Right now I don’t remember any kind of beat/chorus, so they may have some work on making things catchier but nonetheless, I remember I liked them.
Gotye -3 hours of waiting for them to go on, they had to be good. They did not fail. The 2nd half was way more lively. I’d recommend Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know to anyone and everyone. Go Listen!
Active Child -Was not a fan. Guess I’m not into Irish boys singing along with a harp. Sorry to everything that thinks they are “going to be big”.
Parlovr - Definitely in the top 3 of my favorite performances I saw. Just three indie rock friends on stage having a good time. Something that beautiful is contagious.
